Cats, like people, like dogs, have a time period where they are between adolescence and adult. They seem to get into trouble all the time between the age of 1 to sometimes 3 years old. Its their teenage years and they are all about testing boundaries. They'll grow out of it and one day be an "adult". Then you'll miss the kitten years.
Somewhere in this time frame of 0 to 1 year, they gain fear. Fear of people, things, sounds, animals. Because before this, everyone is a play friend to kittens. There could be a snarling dog, and they'll claw up the poor dogs neck to nibble on its ears. But the terrible 2s are a time period when you really have to cat proof your house. From the kitchen garbage can, to the vase that is too close to the edge of a shelf. Murphy's Law is the golden rule here, because if it could happen, then it will. My cat wasn't too terrible, only because he isn't a jumper. So he was limited to the things he could destroy from the waste down.
